CANYONING GUIDE

The course for Canyoning Guide - Module 2 is the second stage of professional training on the path to becoming a professional canyoning guide. The programme is designed to enable individuals to acquire the knowledge, skills and responsibility to plan, organise and conduct difficult and very difficult canyoning tours. The training consists of 100 hours and is both physically and mentally demanding. Candidates are expected to be in good psycho-physical condition, which is tested on a daily basis through practical training. Upon successful completion of the training, the trainee will have acquired the following competences:

  • Ability to plan, organise and guide groups in difficult and very difficult canyon.

  • Working with people and the ability to lead groups, with mastery of communication and motivational techniques.

The training for the Canyoning Guide lasts 9 days, the first few days of the module take place in Slovenia - Bovec and its surroundings. Then the travel part of the module starts. We go abroad (Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Montenegro, etc.) where we encounter more challenging canyons. Candidates organise themselves, no sleeping or transport is provided. Each day, after the tour, we decide which canyon we will go to the next day and where will we meet. As we are improving our guiding skills in Module 2, for each day one of the candidates is assigned to take on the role of guide, whose task is to prepare and lead the next day's tour. Intensive canyoning within the module is the best way to apply the knowledge learnt in Module 1 and at the same time to acquire the skills of an independent guide. In Module 2, candidates are introduced to the following theoretical and practical subjects:

  • Personal and Technical Equipment II.

  • Planning, guideing and analysis of a tour II.

  • Orientation II.

  • Preparation of a topographic map

  • Geology and types of gorges abroad

  • Anchors II.

  • Complex rope techniques II.

  • Rescue and self-rescue rope techniques II.

Candidates are assessed daily in different areas with grades 1 (best) - 5 (worst). After 8 days of Module 2, an average is calculated from the grades, which must not exceed a grade of 2.5 otherwise the candidate cannot approach the final Guiding Exam, which takes place on the 9th day of the training.

The last step before becoming a Canyoning Guide is the Guiding Exam. In the exam, the candidate must prove that he/she has mastered all the skills of a guide by leading a group of real guests, and is assessed by a panel of instructors. For the Guiding Exam, the candidate must bring his/her own group of guests (amateurs), obtain and prepare equipment, take care of logistics and information transfer, give instructions before the start of the tour, guide the tour safely and without error, and finish the tour correctly.
