International canyon rescue exercise

On Saturday, 31 August, an international canyon rescue exercise took place in Predelice canyon, under the excellent organisation of GRS Bovec. Three teams of the mountain rescue services GRS Bovec, Soccorso Alpino e Speleologico (CNSAS) from Italy and Bergrettung Steiermark from Austria were present at the exercise. Two instructors from the Canyon Association of Slovenia also took part in the exercise.

The focus of the exercise was on the use of the Kong Canyon 911 stretcher, which was developed specifically for the purpose of rescue from canyons, especially from canyons that require a conventional rescue, as the type of canyon makes helicopter assistance impossible. The objective was to transport a stretcher over nine waterfalls in the upper part of the Predelica gorge, most of the time the stretcher was empty (no casualty), and at some waterfalls one of the SOZS instructors was in the stretcher as a casualty. The stretcher exercise was completed after the end of the upper part of the gorge, and then some rescuers continued without the stretcher through the lower part of the Predelica canyon.

The exercise was well conducted and we exchanged a lot of excellent information, which is important for both rescue units and individual canyon guides.

We would like to thank GRS Bovec for inviting us to the exercise!
